Book Review

This week I’ve been reading Jon Ronson’s latest, The Castle: Adventures in a World of Unraveling Men, and I wanted to share my thoughts.

The book examines modern masculinity in a ‘post-woke world’. Men today face more social scrutiny than their Fathers and Grandfathers, and this book explores how that plays out.

The book is framed by the story of Chris Mark- an American Billionaire who’s a pseudo-Hugh Hefner type and hosts debauched parties in a Castle he constructed and designed.  Ronson’s son attends a party at the Castle and, horrified by what he sees, contacts his Dad for a rescue.  Ronson starts investigating Chris Mark, setting off a battle of wills between the pair that plays out throughout the book.  Meanwhile, Ronson examines his own masculinity and the overwhelming emotions of power and weakness that drive his personality.

Power and vulnerability are key themes, particularly how the roles of ‘oppressor’ and ‘oppressed’ can reverse in public opinion.  Ronson weaves Chris Mark's story with other controversial figures, including a YouTuber who unintentionally sparked public outrage and social media figures who openly court outrage, like Graham Linehan.  In fact, the book includes a really interesting interview between the pair.

Overall, the book is a really good read; Ronson is as witty and self-effacing as always, and his mastery at finding connection through contrasting stories is in full effect.

The book poses interesting questions: What does it mean to be authentically male? And what's the difference between authenticity and disinhibition?

Overall, the book is a compassionate perspective on men and masculinity.  It also explains that, in a world with changing social norms, some people are drawn to the fantasy of someone like Chris Mark, who is rich enough to create a fairytale Castle filled with women, money, and luxury cars.
